Stainless Steel Grade Classification
Chemical composition, mechanical properties, and cross-standard comparison for 304/304L/316/316L/321/347/410/430 across ASTM and IS specifications
◉ ASTM A240/A240M-19, A276-03, A479/A479M-23a; IS 6911:1992, IS 6603:2001 STYLE CHECK · NOT A REGULATORY SUBMISSION TOOL
⚠ Indicative tool only, and genuinely different standards, not five copies of one. A240 (plate/sheet/strip), A276 (bars/shapes), and A479 (bars for boilers/pressure vessels) cover the same UNS grades with different requirements — most notably, A479's elongation minimum for 304/316/321/347 is 30%, while A240 and A276 both specify 40% for the identical grade. IS 6911 (sheet/plate) and IS 6603 (bars/flats) are the Indian counterparts, using the IS 1762 letter-symbol designation system (e.g. X04Cr19Ni9 for grade 304) — these are the 1992 and 2001 editions respectively; both have since been superseded (IS 6911:2017, IS 6603:2024) which were not reviewed here. Every figure below was read directly from the standards' own tables, not their garbled text extraction.

Cross-Standard Comparison
A479 does not cover 410/430 (ferritic/martensitic grades are outside its scope — it's an austenitic/austenitic-ferritic pressure vessel bar spec for those grades).
