IS 803 Radiographic Weld Acceptance
Spot radiograph frequency and location, weld reinforcement limits, and inclusion/porosity acceptance criteria for shell joints radiographed to justify a joint efficiency of 0.85
◉ IS 803-1976 (REAFFIRMED 2006), §11 · NOT A REGULATORY SUBMISSION TOOL
⚠ Indicative tool only. Source: IS 803-1976, Section 11, read from its own text. This section only applies where a joint efficiency of 0.85 is specified and spot radiography is used to justify it (§11.1) — the same E = 0.85 already used in Tank Protocol's IS 803 shell tool. Table 17 (porosity charts by weld thickness) is shown as reference; the code's own acceptance route for intermediate thicknesses is comparison with the next-thinner material or by calculation (§11.7(d)(5)) — this tool does the calculation route (0.060T mm² per 150 mm) directly rather than interpolating the chart.

1. Weld Reinforcement Limit (§11.2)
2. Number and Location of Spot Radiographs (§11.3)
Plates count as the same thickness when the difference in specified/design thickness is ≤ 0.8 mm (§11.3.1c). At least 25% of selected vertical-joint spots shall be at vertical/horizontal intersections, minimum 2 per tank (§11.3.1a).
3. Inclusion Acceptance (§11.7 a, b, c)
A single elongated inclusion:
In-line group of inclusions (§11.7c): sum of the longest dimensions of all imperfections in a line, over a length of 6T (or proportionally less if the radiograph is shorter than 6T), shall not exceed T — unless every individual gap between imperfections exceeds three times the length of the longer adjacent imperfection.
4. Porosity Acceptance (§11.7 d)
Clustered porosity (§11.7d3): in any 25 mm length or 2T (whichever smaller), porosity may reach 4× the normal concentration — that cluster still counts toward the 150 mm total. Aligned porosity (§11.7d4): sum of pore diameters ≤ T within 12T or 150 mm (whichever less), each pore separated from the largest adjacent pore by ≥ 6× that pore's diameter.
