Reference oil properties, standard test conditions, and IRM-vs-legacy-ASTM-oil volume swell correlation for elastomer compatibility testing
◉ ASTM D471-06, D5964-15a STYLE CHECK · NOT A REGULATORY SUBMISSION TOOL
⚠ Indicative tool only. IRM 901/902/903 oils replaced the older ASTM No. 1/2/3 oils (the latter discontinued due to carcinogenicity concerns) — the two don't produce identical results, which is exactly what D5964's correlation data quantifies. All figures below are transcribed directly from the standards' own tables; verify against your own copy for any formal test report or specification compliance decision.

Reference Oil Properties (D471 Table 1)
Aniline point is the key severity indicator: lower aniline point means more severe (more aggressive) swelling action on rubber. ASTM Oils No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 have been replaced by IRM 901, 902, and 903 respectively; ASTM No. 1 is no longer commercially available.

Standard Test Temperatures & Immersion Periods (D471 Table 2)
Standard, commonly-used combinations. The immersion period tolerance is ±15 min or ±1% of the period, whichever is greater.
PCd = [(Pi − Pr) / Pr] × 100. A value of zero means identical performance; positive means the IRM oil gives a higher property value than the ASTM oil for that property.
Percent difference (PCd) in volume swell, IRM oil vs. the ASTM oil it replaced, across twelve rubber types. Each value is the average of six tests (three laboratories, duplicate results). ACM data excluded from IRM 902's summary columns (marked *) due to a near-zero-denominator distortion the standard itself flags.

ASTM Reference Fuels (D471 Table 3)
Fuel C (50% isooctane/50% toluene) is the same "Fuel C" already used as the gasoline surrogate baseline in Tank Protocol's Fuel-Material Compatibility (Hansen) calculator — Reference Fuels I (M15) and K (M85) have been added there as computed blend points.
